Tax savings input

Everyone wants to claim tax deductions and there’s no doubt that saving money in taxes is high on everybody’s list of financial priorities. But considering the complicated income-tax law, how many people really know about them or take full advantage of them. Surely, you could be missing a few of them. That’s why it is worthwhile to be aware of the tax deductions which can save your moolah.Let’s look at some commonly overlooked tax deductions.

Home sweet Home
Your home is not only your living shelter but also your tax shelter. If you live in a rental apartment and are a salaried person then you can claim house rent allowance. If not, you can claim deduction of the rent paid in excess of 10% of the total income subject to certain specified limits/ conditions. If you own your home you can claim the benefit of deduction in respect of the interest paid on loan from a financial institution. Many people often restrict this amount to Rs 1,50,000. However, it is pertinent to note that this restriction applies only for property considered as self occupied in nature and does not apply in cases where the property is let out or deemed to be let out. Further, expenses like stamp duty, registration fees and other expenses incurred during transfer of the house property for purchasing a house can be considered for the purpose of determining the benefit of tax deduction in respect of repayment of the loan installment.

Have a philanthropic heart
At times on an impulse we give donations which qualify for tax deduction. If we have paid them by cheque, we remember them more often than not whilst preparing our tax returns. But if we have paid by cash we generally tend to forget them. It is essential we do a little charity for ourselves at the same time as well— after all charity begins at home. All we need to do is get a written receipt in respect of our tax eligible donation. And off course, we shouldn’t forget to clean out our closets where we would have stored such receipts. Trust me, the resultant tax savings are worth the effort

Education
Today the cost of education is scorching high which adds to the financial burden.
In this respect, in case you avail of a loan for higher education of your child or your spouse, then you can claim a deduction of the interest paid on such loan.

Health is Wealth
The deduction on medical insurance though of a small quantum of Rs 15,000 is often left out to be claimed. A bonanza is available in the form of an additional deduction of Rs 15,000 towards medical insurance premium paid for your parents.
Further, in case you have paid any amount for the medical treatment of any disabled person dependent on you then again you are entitled to a deduction in the range of Rs.40,000 to Rs.75,000.

Other finer points
Various deductions viz. life insurance premia, deferred annuity, contributions to provident fund, subscription to certain equity shares, tuition fees, house loan repayment, etc are all covered under a single basket of availing deduction upto Rs 1,00,000.

However, one tends to generally forget that all these are restricted under this cap.
At the end of it, just remember what’s one of the most important questions you need to ask every time you pay cash or write a cheque for payment or investment — Can I claim this as a tax deduction?

11 tips to protect your card

1. Put your signature fasT
Always put your signature on the signature panel of your card as soon as you receive it. Although this is one of the terms and conditions of a card's use set by the associations, this may also help prevent its misuse in case it falls into the hands of someone else.
Simply because that person can put one's own signature behind it and start using it without alerting the merchant's suspicion. Also, if the card is later recovered, then you may be held liable for all the transactions done by that person. "Putting your signature is a good way for the seller to cross check the genuineness of the presenter. And most credit card companies insist that the card be signed by the user before making any purchases," says Ashish Kapur, CEO, Invest Shoppe India Ltd.

2. Don't give photocopy of both the sides
Do not provide photocopies of both the sides of the credit card to anyone. This is because the card verification value (CVV), which is required for online transactions, is printed on the reverse of the card. Anyone can use the card for online purchases if the information is available with one.

3. PIN precautions
Never write your personal identification number (PIN) on your card. Instead memorise it or keep the number separately from your card. This way you can prevent the card's misuse in case the card falls into someone's hand. If both the card and PIN are there, then someone can withdraw cash from the ATM machines.
Also, you must keep your PIN secure and must not disclose it to anyone. Keep changing your PIN and access passwords to avoid
frauds and misuse. Don't use an obvious password like your birth date or your mother's maiden name

4. Avoid giving out card number online
Don't give out your credit card number online unless you know and trust the company in question. Because when you input your credit card information at a website or send it in an e-mail, that information is transmitted across the internet as if it were written on the back of a postcard. "To ensure the security of your account, that information should be encrypted using the latest technology. A fraudulent site
may tell you that you don't need to encrypt the information. Don't believe it," says an HSBC spokesperson.
5. Don't always trust a site
Before using a secured transaction site, check out the encryption software it uses. You can do this by clicking on the icon that looks like a lock located on the bottom right corner of the screen. A certification by VeriSign would be one of the industry's trusted technology.

"Some sites may claim to be encrypted when they actually are not. If you are not sure, ask for an alternate method of payment," says the HSBC spokesperson.

6. Don't give information over phone

Do not give any information to persons seeking credit card information over phone unless you have yourself initiated the talk. They may even claim to be a bank's representative, but you actually don't know who they really are. Know that banks and
other legitimate businesses never ask for passwords, account numbers or updated information via email or over phone.

"Treat all unsolicited e-mail (and phone) messages with scepticism and avoid clicking on website links," says Kapur

7. Separate record of card information

You should also keep a separate record of the credit card information as well as customer service telephone numbers so that you could contact the issuer in the event that your card is lost or stolen.

8. Notify immediately
In case your credit card gets misplaced, notify the credit card company as soon as possible to avoid any fraud transaction and get the card cancelled immediately. Once informed, you liability will be limited.

9. Watch your card being swiped

You should also watch your card being swiped on the terminals which should normally be done in clear view to ensure no external readers are used to capture your credit card data. Check that the merchant swiping your card does not swipe multiple times. If you are suspicious, you can always alert your issuing bank.

10. Exercise caution at the ATM
Exercise caution at the ATM and ensure that you are alone when you are entering your secret PIN.
In case your card gets stuck in the machine, inform the card issuer immediately.

11. Monitor financial statements
You should also keep monitoring your financial statements. Make sure there are no changes or transactions you did not initiate. Because if reported after the stipulated period, you will be liable for any fraud transaction. To avoid this, keep copies of sales slips and compare charges when bills arrive. If there is a mistake, call your issuer right away.

Turn your MP3 players down

Millions of youngsters across Europe could suffer permanent hearing loss after five years if they listen to MP3 players at too high a volu
me for more than five hours a week, EU scientists warned on Monday.

The scientists' study, requested by the European Commission, attacked the concept of "leisure noise," saying children and teenagers should be protected from increasingly high sound levels -- with loud mobile phones also coming in for criticism.

"There has been increasing concern about exposure from the new generation of personal music players which can reproduce sounds at very high volumes without loss of quality," the Commission, the EU's executive arm, said in a statement.

"Risk for hearing damage depends on sound level and exposure time," it said. More and more young people were exposed to the significant threat that leisure noise posed to hearing, it said.

Commission experts estimate that between 50 and 100 million people listen to portable music players on a daily basis.

If they listened for only five hours a week at more than 89 decibels, they would already exceed EU limits for noise allowed in the workplace, they said. But if they listened for longer periods, they risked permanent hearing loss after five years.

The scientists calculated the number of people in that risk category at between five and 10 percent of listeners, meaning up to 10 million people in the European Union.

Sales of personal music players have soared in EU countries in recent years, particularly of MP3 players.

Commission experts estimate unit sales between 184 and 246 million for all portable audio devices just over the last four years, of which MP3 players range between 124 and 165 million.

Mobile phones used at excessive volume also came under fire from Meglena Kuneva, the EU's consumer affairs commissioner.

"I am concerned that so many young people ... who are frequent users of personal music players and mobile phones at high acoustic levels, may be unknowingly damaging their hearing irrevocably," she said in the statement.
